Choosing your first Pilates class can feel harder than it needs to. Mat and reformer Pilates share a focus on controlled movement, breath and alignment, but use different equipment. Neither format is automatically the easier option: the exercises, pace and teaching all shape the experience.
What happens in mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates takes place on a mat on the floor. Your own body weight provides much of the challenge, and classes may use small equipment such as Pilates balls, rings or light weights. At Radiant, Mat Method Sculpt focuses on controlled full-body movement and welcomes all levels. Strong brings a more strength-focused approach.
Mat classes are available at our Taunton and Woodbury, Exeter studios. If you are interested in heated Pilates, try Sculpt or Strong before Mat Method HOT to become familiar with the movement first.
What happens in reformer Pilates?
A reformer has a moving carriage, springs and straps. The springs provide resistance and support; their role depends on the exercise and setup. Learning how the equipment feels is part of the experience, so give yourself permission to take your first class at a considered pace.
For your first reformer visit, we recommend Mindful Motion. The class focuses on controlled movement, alignment and breath. Radiant offers reformer Pilates in Taunton, Woodbury, Exeter and Hambledon, Surrey.
How do you choose?
Think about the setting you would enjoy, the class times you can attend and whether you want to explore the reformer or begin on a mat. You can try both over time; there is no requirement to become experienced in one before considering the other.
If you need to discuss suitability or support, contact the studio before booking. This is especially important if you are pregnant, returning after birth or managing an injury or health condition. The studio can explain its requirements and the appropriate next steps.
